In a version of the "teenage diary," Benning places her feelings of confusion and depression alongside grisly tales from tabloid headlines and brutal events in her neighborhood. The difficulty of finding a positive identity for oneself in a world filled with violence is starkly revealed by Benning’s youthful but already despairing voice.

Sadie Benning est une vidéaste, plasticienne et musicienne américaine. Elle commence à se faire un nom au début des années 1990 en tant qu'adolescente vidéaste à Milwaukee (Wisconsin). La majorité de ses courts métrages combinent la performance, la narration expérimentale, l'écriture manuscrite et des extraits musicaux pour explorer, entre autres thématiques, le genre et la sexualité. Son travail fut deux fois sélectionné pour la biennale du Whitney Museum. En 1998, elle cofonde Le Tigre, un groupe de rock féministe post-punk qui compte parmi ses membres la chanteuse et guitariste Kathleen Hanna (une ex-Bikini Kill) et la rédactrice de fanzine Johanna Fateman.

Sadie Benning is a lesbian videomaker who began making videos when she was 15-years old. Benning's early works were made in the privacy of her childhood bedroom, using scrawled and handwritten text from diary entries to record thoughts and images that reveal the longings and complexities of a developing identity. The majority of Benning's shorts combined performance, experimental narrative, handwriting, and cut-up music to explore, among other subjects, gender and sexuality. Her work was twice included in the Whitney Biennial. In 1998, Benning co-founded Le Tigre, the feminist post-punk band whose members include ex-Bikini Kill singer/guitarist Kathleen Hanna and zinester Johanna Fateman. Benning left the band in 2001.

Ce documentaire est basé sur les interviews de trois femmes africaines américaines, Angela Davis, la poétesse June Jordan, et Alice Walker, écrivaine auteure de La couleur pourpre. Retraçant l'histoire de la lutte de libération des africains américains pour leurs droits civiques, Angela Davis évoque ses liens avec les Black Panthers et le parti communiste. A partir de leur engagement dans la lutte anti-raciste, ces trois femmes explorent les liens qui les amènent à s'engager dans le mouvement lesbien, ainsi que dans les luttes anti-impérialistes et de libération des peuples à travers le monde.

"A Place of Rage" is an exhuberant award winning documentary by filmmaker Pratibha Parmar. It is a celebration of the contributions and achievements of prominent African American women and includes interviews with Angela Davis, June Jordan and Alice Walker. Within the context of civil rights, black power, lesbian and gay rights and the feminist movement, the trio reassess how women like Rosa Parks and Fannie Lou Hamer revolutionised American society and the world generally. "A Place of Rage" made its debut in 1991 yet it's content is still one of the richest and most cherished with candid interviews from Angela Davis, Alice Walker and powerful poetry from June Jordan.

Pratibha Parmar has directed and produced music videos, fiction films and a quite a number of documentaries concentrated on issues related to race, sexuality and gender.

Anne Trister, a young Swiss Jewish artist, is profoundly affected by the death of her father. After quitting school, she leaves Switzerland for Quebec to visit her friend Alix, a psychologist to whom she becomes attracted. Through her work, Alix has developed an emotional bond with Sarah, a rebellious child with an enormous need to be loved. Detached from the world around her, Anne takes over a vacant studio to paint a giant fresco and throws herself into a series of fleeting and impulsive affairs.

D'abord enseignante, Léa Pool s'intéresse rapidement aux métiers du cinéma. En 1975, elle quitte la Suisse pour le Québec, où elle suit des études en communications à l'Université du Québec à Montréal (UQAM). En 1978, elle réalise un court métrage documentaire intitulé Laurent Lamerre, portier. Un an plus tard, elle écrit, réalise et produit un premier long métrage de fiction : Strass café. Ce film tourné en noir et blanc est primé dans plusieurs festivals. A l'aise dans le cinéma intimiste, Léa Pool prend l'habitude de mettre en scène des personnages féminins de caractère. Ses films, généralement très introspectifs, sont souvent marqués par les thèmes de l'exil, de l'identité sexuelle et du judaïsme, avec une touche parfois autobiographique.

Firstly teacher, Léa Pool is quickly interested in the professions of cinema. In 1975, she left Switzerland for Quebec, where she studied communications at the Université du Québec à Montréal (UQAM). In 1978, she made a short documentary entitled "Laurent Lamerre, portier." A year later, she wrote, directed and produced a first feature film: "Strass café." This film shot in black and white is awarded in several festivals. At ease in the intimate cinema, Léa Pool is used to stage female characters of character. Her films, usually very introspective, are often marked by the themes of exile, sexual identity and Judaism, with a touch sometimes autobiographical.

Being a lesbian no longer means giving up motherhood, thanks in part to the culture-changing impact of this feminist classic. These pioneering lesbian mothers figured out how to bring children into their families while overcoming social and legal hurdles.
Hailed as a pioneering achievement when it was first released in 1984, "Choosing Children" dramatically challenged the assumption that being lesbian means you can't be a mom. Six lesbian-headed families make decisions about how to become pregnant, navigate the process of adoption, whether to involve men in parenting, and address reactions from relatives, doctors and schoolmates. In so doing, they helped redefine what "family" means and opened the door for everyone to consider parenting, regardless of sexual orientation.

Debra Chasnoff was an Academy Award-winning documentary filmmaker. She was the executive director and senior producer at GroundSpark - a national non-profit documentary and activist education company. She has directed many documentaries, among them "Choosing Children" (1984). Millions of people around the world heard her thank her then 'life partner,' Kim Klausner, when accepting an Oscar in 1992 for best documentary short.
Mimi (Kim) Klausner is an archivist and social activist. She co-directed and co-produced the film "Choosing Children" with Debra Chasnoff, and said the two women worked together with the PTA at their sons' elementary school to teach staff, parents, and students about diversity. The film, said Klausner, was "made at this pivotal point in lesbian history where women had started to have children on the down low but it was not widely known in the community. We found a few of the women who had already done it, which inspired other women to think about whether they wanted to become parents." Previously, said Klausner, "When you came out as gay you assumed you were not going to be a parent. But the film gave people an opportunity to see that this was an option and it radically changed the lesbian universe."

Adapté de Jane Rule, Desert of the Heart, ce film raconte la rencontre dans les années 50 de Vivian, venue passer quelques semaines à Reno pour divorcer, et de Cay qui vit dans le ranch où elle séjourne. Cay tient à son indépendance et craint par dessus tout d'être récupérée par les conventions et les clichés qui sont le lot de la femme américaine à cette époque. Entre les deux femmes va se construire une relation d'amitié d'abord difficile, qui les conduira néanmoins à découvrir la passion amoureuse.
Ce film peut être salué comme un grand film novateur, montrant une magnifique scène d'amour entre deux femmes, et pour la première fois une fiction où l'amour lesbien n'est pas synonyme d'échec et de malheur !

She segued from award-winning documentary filmmaker to producing and directing "Desert Hearts," the landmark hit of the 1986 Sundance, Telluride, and Toronto Film Festivals. The film was one of the first film releases to depict a lesbian love story in a generally mainstream, with positive and respectful themes. The film was distributed worldwide.

En 1988, le docteur Gould, fait paraître dans Cosmopolitan un article d'informations sur la transmission du SIDA concernant les femmes. Cet article affirmant que les femmes ayant des rapports sexuels 'normaux' ne peuvent être contaminées, fait se mobiliser les lesbiennes du groupe Act-Up de New York. La vidéo vivante et spontanée de J. Carlomusto, militante lesbienne et cinéaste, questionne sur la place des lesbiennes non seulement au sein d'Act-Up, mais plus largement sur notre prise de conscience et notre implication politique à partir de nos comportements sexuels privés, vis à vis du SIDA.

The numerous works that she collaborated on, included: "Target City Hall", "Seize Control of the FDA", "Testing the Limits:NYC," and "Living with AIDS: Women and AIDS."
