"Damned if you don't" is Friedrich's subversive and ecstatic response to her Catholic upbringing. Blending conventional narrative technique with impressionistic camerawork, symbols and voice-overs, this film creates an intimate study of sexual expression and repression. Elle écrit, filme, monte et produit seule ses films. Elle enseigne également la production vidéo à l'université de Princeton.

Su Friedrich is a New York-based filmmaker who writes, directs, photographs and edits. She has directed twenty-three films and videos since 1978, which have been featured in eighteen retrospectives at major museums and film festivals, including one at the Museum of Modern Art in 2007. The films have been widely screened at film festivals, universities and art centers, have been extensively written about, and have won numerous awards, including Grand Prix for "Sink or Swim" at the Melbourne International Film Festival. She currently teaches video production at Princeton University.

"Dangerous Bliss" is part of an exhibition titled "Fantasmagoria: Sexing the Lesbian Imagery." Featuring the work of six female artists, "Fantasmagoria" was a multi-media "exploration of fantasy and the Lesbian erotic imaginary." A challenge to the political restriction of "marginal artists in Canada," this exhibition sought to use "visibility and celebration as a response to the continued threat of censorship for queer artists."

Carla Wolf graduated from Simon Fraser University in 1990. Her work focuses in the operation of visual pleasure in the moving image and the heterosexual bias of the viewer. Vancouver based, Carla works in video, installation and new media. Her work has been exhibited across Canada, Internationally and in cyberspace.

Two women swing in a dreamlike dance. One wears a black dress, severe and reserved, the other a décolleté white dress like an undergarment. Sometimes they seem to melt in slow motion.
"Dreams of a Virgin" is about the wish to melt together polarized female role clichés hereby becoming one. Through freeze frames, slow-motion videos and double-exposure, a curiously separating effect is resulting: touch and fusion caused by the film material show the longed for unity as a heterogeneous mixture. Like water and oil the elements stay separated.

Elle vit et travaille en tant qu'indépendante à Berlin. Elle a fait plusieurs films et installations vidéo depuis 1985. Le sexe, le pouvoir et les relations de genre constituent les thèmes principaux de son œuvre qui est passée d'un travail du support cinématographique à une question politique précise véhiculée par les images et non les mots.

Born 1959 in Baden-Württemberg, Claudia Schillinger pursued studies in fine arts with the main emphasis on experimental film at the Art colleges in Bremen and Brunswick, masterclass of professor Gerhard Büttenbender. She lives and works as a freelance in Berlin. She has made several films and video installations since 1985. Her work is deeply concerned with sex, power and gender relations and has moved from a material film work (film as film) to an issue-oriented politic conveyed in images, not words.

Une histoire d'amour entre deux terroristes empêche qu'Anna exécute Vera. La trahison qui devait justifier l'exécution est un double jeu. La route, un monde étranger, pas une âme qui vive sauf un cueilleur d'olives. Monologues intérieur de Vera. Elle fait ressurgir les images de ce voyage entrepris il y a dix ans. Images et sons suivent deux pistes parallèles. Deux morceaux de musique instrumentale arménienne et hongroise situent les lieux de l'action. La transposition du Super-8 sur du 16mm renforce l'effet granuleux et les couleurs rouge sombre.

A love between two terrorists, a love which prevents Anna from executing Vera. The betrayal intended to justify the execution reveals itself as a double game. The film is a roadmovie, alien, and, except for an olive-picker, empty of people. The text is Vera's inner monologue, in which she recaptures images from the journey made ten years ago. Sound and image run parallel like the tracks of a slalom. Two pieces of music, Armenian and Hungarian, set the emotional tone with their old-fashioned beauty. The S-8 material has been blown up to 16 mm and the use of overlays has intensified the reddish and grainy effect of the original material.

Born in 1953 in Linz, Gerda E. Grossmann was raised in Salzburg. She has studied Social Work in Vienna and West Berlin. Between 1983 and 89 she pursued studies at the German Film and Television Academy in Berlin. Since 1985 Gerda E. Grossmann works as a freelance sound engineer for documentary and feature films. She lives in Berlin and Salzburg.

Kathleen Pirrie Adams is a curator and writer who focuses on experimental film and video, new media art, popular music, and the history of sexuality. Her intelligent analyses and assessments of lesbian culture have appeared in print venues ranging from "Take One" to "Fuse". During the 1990s, Adams was also involved in queer video production and often curated thematic programs at Inside Out and local galleries.

Anne Golden is an independent curator and writer. She has participated in numerous panels on curatorial practices and independent distribution. Golden is also the Artistic Director for Groupe Intervention Video, an artist-run distribution centre that works to put the channels of artistic control back in to the hands of Montreal's filmmakers and video artists.

We enter her world to hear a dislocated and poetic story of desire.

Sadie Benning est une vidéaste, plasticienne et musicienne américaine. Elle commence à se faire un nom au début des années 1990 en tant qu'adolescente vidéaste à Milwaukee (Wisconsin). La majorité de ses courts métrages combinent la performance, la narration expérimentale, l'écriture manuscrite et des extraits musicaux pour explorer, entre autres thématiques, le genre et la sexualité. Sadie Benning is a lesbian videomaker who began making videos when she was 15-years old. Benning's early works were made in the privacy of her childhood bedroom, using scrawled and handwritten text from diary entries to record thoughts and images that reveal the longings and complexities of a developing identity. The majority of Benning's shorts combined performance, experimental narrative, handwriting, and cut-up music to explore, among other subjects, gender and sexuality. Her work was twice included in the Whitney Biennial. In 1998, Benning co-founded Le Tigre, the feminist post-punk band whose members include ex-Bikini Kill singer/guitarist Kathleen Hanna and zinester Johanna Fateman. Benning left the band in 2001.

Kaz Cooke is a well-known Australian author and cartoonist. Her cartoon character "Hermoine, the modern girl" first appeared in "The Sydney Morning Herald" in 1984. Hermoine has become a popular character through her appearance in Kaz's bestselling books, which include "The Modern Girl's Guide To Everything" and the annual "Modern Girl's Diary". Kaz Cooke is also the author of a book "Real Gorgeous: The Truth About Body and Beauty," which explores the same themes as in this film.
