» Rachel Ara
"Monomyth" is an experimental film that uses time, space, ritual and repetition to depict loss. The film is a durational experience of my grandmother shaving my head. Each gesture, touch and caress that would be missed in the everyday is captured by the camera; giving depth to the drama. The film does not rely on spoken narrative, but on strong visual images and sound. Through the simple act of the grandmother cutting then shaving the woman's hair we experience an introspective, emotional journey through separation, loss, initiation and return. The grandmother acts sometimes as the mentor, guiding and supporting the woman through fear and loss, finally to comfort and empowerment. "Monomyth" could be seen as rite of passage, a fairytale...
