Report on the 14th Festival 2002

Attendance is up with 1,856 memberships against 1,774 at the 13th festival, while the number of entries is falling: 6,997 compared to 7,186 in 2001. Indeed, the single hall of the Trianon, admittedly larger, does not allow to organize as many different screenings and to "double" the screening of certain films (documentaries and short films). You have been 382 to resort to presales and 170 of you tested the "pass", attending an average of 9.89 sessions each.

The sale of 512 catalogs (577 in 2001), added to advertising revenue, made it possible to release a small margin on the manufacturing cost in order to contribute to the communication costs of the festival.

For the Saturday evening, the Divan du Monde room proved to be much too small: only 460 admissions (including 324 members) against 568 the previous year at the Espace des Peupliers, with the disappointment for many women not to have been able to participate in the party.

Compared to previous years, the structure of the budget is changing. In revenue, the share of memberships and tickets is becoming more important. The catering activity remains a mainstay of the festival's financing, but the receipts are decreasing due to the material conditions: the cafeteria space is tighter, with a single point of sale. At the same time, expenses are falling, thanks in particular to less recourse to the purchase of finished products such as savory pies to offer more dishes entirely cooked by the team. The share of expenses devoted to the venue exploded with two rentals (Trianon and Divan du Monde) and additional technical equipment. The intervention of the technicians is added to the rental of the room when it was partially included in the price of the cultural space of the Kremlin-Bicêtre. The performances also generated additional technical costs. The cost control efforts made by the commissions are reflected in the decline observed, particularly in programming and communication. One-off factors also weighed on the budget: regularization of taxes and duties for 2000 and 2001 as a result of liability to commercial taxes.

In conclusion, the 14th festival is a success, but this year again profitability has not been achieved. The deficit of 5,201 euros is however less accentuated than in 2001 (6,581 €). For the second year at the Trianon, the team will be able to count on the experience of the past year and will face fewer unknowns.
